Our Goal

The primary goal of Gradient Escape is to provide users with an educational experience capable of helping them to understand the concept of gradient functions through an interactive journey set in a misty forest. The game challenges you to navigate its punishing environment using the mysterious “gradient map“ - interpreting it correctly is crucial if you want to escape.

Gameplay

Gradient Escape is a first-person game with an emphasis on exploration and problem solving. The player awakens in an ominous forest and is guided into the game by a speaking owl, which mocks them and only offers them basic advice on how to navigate the forest. Quickly, the player will have to realize that each path taken in the forest costs them energy, though they are not shown how much before they make their choice. Only the gradient map may help the player to approximate the cost each path takes, allowing them to reach the exit point before their energy runs out.

On their journey, the player is encouraged to explore their environment to find useful items which they must use tactically in order to succeed. Each level is dictated by a unique function which determines the “shape” of the forest and its hidden gradients. To beat the game, the player has to finish all 7 levels with each one requiring them to understand the mathematical concept better than the one before. In addition, there are 3 bonus levels with unique twists available for those looking for a challenge.
